Ford's Silicon Valley Lab

Ford's Silicon Valley Lab
BRIGHTON Mich., -  Bill Ford Jr., Ford Motor Company’s Chairman, has recently traveled to California for the opening of Ford's Silicon Valley Lab.  This lab will be Ford’s pathway into the future as it will allow more and better research to take place and push Ford forward in the automotive races for best technology.

This lab will have at least 15 people working towards innovating a new kind of Ford vehicle: the future Ford vehicle.  It is said that it’s important for this research lab to be in Silicon Valley and not in Dearborn, MI so that employees may have free reign to experiment and to integrate themselves into “one of the most innovative communities in the world,” as explained by Chief Technical Officer Paul Mascarenas.

One way the lab will improve the car world will be to work on better ways to include phones and other electronic devices into Ford vehicles as well as apps that can find and reserve parking spaces for you.  There are much larger issues at hand that will be studied by the lab though, such as how best to handle traffic in overpopulated countries like China and India.

Palo Alto, CA
It will be very interesting to see what types of technology the researchers in the Ford’s Silicon Valley Lab will come up with in the coming years!

Car Seat Tips

Car Seat TipsBRIGHTON Mich., - If you’re a parent of a young child then you know how important it is to make sure that your child is safe at all times.  So then let us ask you this, is your child’s car seat secure in your Ford vehicle?  Read our Car Seat Tips and learn more!

Studies show that only 1 out of four car seats are installed correctly

In the event of an accident a properly used car seat can decrease the chance of a fatality by 71%.

Car seats do expire, and most of them in only 6 years so do not continue to use them after their specified date on the back of the seat.

If you have a vehicle that was manufactured after 2003 then you should use the latch system to secure the seat in your car.

Your child should remain in a car seat until their legs are long enough to be able to bend their knees over the edge of the seat when sitting up straight.  Otherwise children will tend to slouch and the seat belt will not cover their hips (which is where it should be) it will instead cover their stomach.

Ford Mustang for babiesWhy not head on over to our Brighton Ford lot and look for a vehicle with a spacious back seat to fit your child’s car seat as well as all the essentials for a child!  Or check out our Online Inventory and shop around.  We hope that you will use our Car Seat Tips to make your child's Ford experience safer.  But remember, if you're not sure exactly how to install the seat then you can always find classes in your area even if it is just a two-hour class, it will help!

Fuel Economy Myth Busting

Fuel Economy Myth Busting
BRIGHTON Mich., - Many people have their own ideas about how to save on fuel but after you read this fuel economy myth busting information, you'll know exactly how you can save on gas and time by not using them up with methods that don't work.

MYTH: Filling up your tank when the temperature is cooler, such as in the morning, can allow you to get more gas.

FACT: Gasoline is stored underground at most gas stations so the temperature does not change very much within 24 hours.  If you get extra gas it will not be enough to be significant.

MYTH: Independent gas stations have low-quality gasoline.

FACT: No-name gas stations most of the time buy their gasoline from name brand oil companies and is not too different from other more expensive gas stations.  It is true that sometimes off-brand gas can come without additives which clean your engine but your vehicle will in all probability be fine.

MYTH: Premium gas will always get you the best results.

Fuel EfficientFACT: Premium gas is more resistant to preignition (when your fuel burns out of control in your engine) but only the hotter running engines are more susceptible to this.  Luxury and sports vehicles have higher-performing engines and that is why premium is recommended for them.  Most vehicles are created to run just fine on regular gas and premium won’t enhance their performance or fuel economy.  The best way to know what you should be using is to check either the sticker on your fuel-filler door or the owner’s manual.  If they say that premium gas is recommended then you do not need to use it, but if it says it is required then you should use it!

MYTH: When you drive with your windows open it hurts your fuel economy.

Myths vs. FactsFACT: Studies show that driving at 65 mph reduced gas mileage by more than 3 mph whereas driving at 65 mph with the windows down had virtually no effect.  So roll the windows down as much as you or your dog would like!

MYTH: You should always warm up your engine before driving.

FACT: Warming up your engine nowadays is not necessary and it would in fact be better to drive as soon as you turn on the engine instead of wasting gas while your car is stalled.

The Ford Explorer Terrain Management

Ford Explorer Terrain Management BRIGHTON Mich., - If you are in the market for either a 2011 or a 2013 Ford Explorer then your decision to purchase one just got that much easier.  You have the option of a Ford Explorer Terrain Management System in your very own vehicle!

The Ford Explorer Terrain Management System is designed to allow you to shift between four terrain settings when you’re driving.  The four settings include Normal, Mud/Ruts, Sand and Grass/Gravel/Snow.  Wondering how each setting works?

-When your dial is on Normal, the biases torque to the front wheels.

Ford's Journey-When you set it to Mud/Ruts the throttle is switched to offense mode, allowing the wheels to spin, desensitizing stability control and limiting upshifting.

-Sand will make the throttle send maximum torque to the wheels, which places the transmission in lower gears.  This allows the wheels to spin as harshly as needed.

-The Grass/Gravel/Snow setting simply minimizes wheel slip by switching the setting of the throttle.

If you enjoy the outdoors and you love taking road trips then the Ford Explorer Terrain Management System is what you need.  Take a look at our Ford Inventory and find out which Explorer fits you best.  Come and see us at the Brighton Ford Dealership or call us and schedule a test drive today!

Auto Tips For Women

Car Tips For Women

BRIGHTON Mich., - If you’re a woman then you probably know how dangerous it can be to break down by yourself in an unfamiliar area, but knowing a few important tips about cars can keep you safe as well as prepared.

Tires

If your tire begins to lose air it should be noticeable, so start getting used to looking at your tires before you jump in your car.  If the tire does look low then add air or change your tire immediately, don’t wait!

Another warning sign of an ensuing flat tire may be that your car begins to pull left or right.  If this should happen then pull off to the side of a safe road and take a look.  You may need to change your tire.

Before taking a long trip, you should always check your tires for worn spots on your tires where wires may be popping out.  Seeing wires is a bad sign, so you should buy new tires as soon as possible.

Overheated Car
Car Tips For Women
If your car begins to overheat then turn the air conditioning off and turn your heater on as high as it will go.  This will bring the heat away from the engine.  If pulling over right away isn’t an option then coasting can help to cool the engine.

If for more than 90 seconds you are sitting in one spot then switch to neutral to take some of the pressure off of the engine.  Never remove the radiator cap when your engine is hot because you risk volatile heat.

Battery Cables & Connectors

At some point during your ownership of a vehicle you may find that a fuzzy, green substance has enveloped your battery.  This substance is battery acid so be careful not to touch it without protective gloves and eyewear.  This can be an easy fix, simply pour some Coca Cola on the fuzz.  If this doesn’t work then you’ll need to first remove the cables and scrub them clean with a wire brush.

Brakes

Chances are that if it’s raining then you’re probably going to have to drive through a puddle or two.  You’ll have to dry your brakes after this happens so be sure to accelerate slowly while pushing your brake, so that it is open to the air.

Living in Michigan you see a lot of potholes, so if you can’t avoid them then simply do not apply your brakes while driving over them.  Otherwise, your suspension may be damaged.

Car Tips For Women
Misc. Tips

If it is windy out and you feel your car being pushed while you drive, then try rolling down your rear windows a little bit, this way the wind will flow through the car instead of pushing it.

If your car smells bad then take dryer sheets and tuck them in various places inside.  Leave them until you no longer notice any unpleasant smells.

Do you have problems with pet hair sticking to every surface of your interior?  Use Static Guard to detach it.

Remember to always be prepared with a fully charged cell phone as well as things like blankets or a jacket just in case you get stuck somewhere for a while.  Check out our other Brighton Ford blog with more tips!  If you have any other questions or just want more tips then you can come and talk to us or call us at Brighton Ford.  We are here to help!

2012 Ford Focus ST

2012 Ford Focus ST
BRIGHTON Mich., - The 2012 Ford Focus ST is a big step into the future where you own a car that not only has new dual-clutch Six-Speed PowerShift Automatic Transmission, Torque Vectoring Control and AdvanceTrac ESC (Electronic Stability Control) with ABS (Anti-lock Brakes), it also has EPAS (Electronic Power Assist Steering).

With Ford’s new Focus, comes the possibility that your life will become that much more safe, convenient, and exciting! The six-speed PowerShift automatic transmission makes changing gears more effortless than ever before.  This car’s fuel-efficient design allows you to make good use of the excellent gear shifting abilities as well. SelectShift technology is also available for certain models, giving you the ability to change gears simply with the press of a button.
2012 Ford Focus ST
According to Ford, the new Torque Vectoring Control system harnesses the traction transferred by G forces when taking a corner from the outside tires and shifts the torque to the most stable wheels.  Meanwhile, the front of the Focus clings to the inside of every curve and basically renders understeer obsolete.

Every Ford Focus has AdvanceTrac ESC with ABS, yet one still marvels at the ability of the technology to continuously survey the driver’s responses and road conditions then apply the ABS brakes and adjust engine power, in order to keep all four wheels securely on the ground.

2012 Ford Focus STThe EPAS’s Pull-Drift Compensation technology measures the steering input of the driver, compensates for steady crosswinds or uneven road surfaces and adjusts to the changing road conditions.

You’ll be amazed by all of the bells and whistles this new Focus has to ensure that you have an intrepid life. Look for the perfect car for you in the Brighton Ford Inventory and if you have any questions or concerns then feel free to contact us!

2012 Ford Focus Electric Vehicle

Ford Electric Car
BRIGHTON Mich., - These days everyone has to think more about being eco-friendly, and an excellent way to get started is with the new 2012 Ford Focus Electric car! Many people’s reactions to hearing that a car runs on electricity is that it would be a hassle and what are you supposed to do if the car runs out of battery?  Well we have news for you…it’s easy!  Not only that, but it is rated the most fuel-efficient five-passenger car in the U.S.  There is even a 240-volt charging station that allows you to fully charge your vehicle in half the amount of time it takes other electric car competitors such as the 2012 Nissan Leaf.
Ford Electric CarAs I mentioned before, the Focus Electric can be charged from your very own home charging station, so you’ll never need another drop of gas again!  You can even use your cell phone to connect to the MyFord Mobileapp which allows you to control and monitor your vehicle’s charge levels, change the temperature in your car and even locate charging stations near you.  Don’t have a smart phone? The car has a built in Navigational System that can calculate either the most energy-efficient routes or those that will give you the most mileage out of each charge.  If you have an all-electric motor vehicle then you know that there is a high rpm range that comes with it, but for those of you who don’t, never fear, the Focus Electric is built with a single-speed transmission built to handle this exact type of motor.  With this car you’ll have a quiet, smooth and awe-inspiringly energy efficient ride everywhere you go.  Even the interior is designed to be just as eco-conscious as its new owner!  The seat fabric is made of 100% recycled materials and the cushions are made of foam produced from plant seed oils.

Ford Biometric Stress Detectors

Biometric Driver Stress DetectingBRIGHTON Mich., - Ford Motor Company is currently working on developing stress detectors that are located in your seat belt and steering wheel, making your driving experience as safe as possible.

Although there are a few fully functional prototypes of these sensors, Ford is still in the research stage with this new state of the art technology.  Ford is striving to find what is referred to as the “sweet spot”, which is the median between high attention times and low attention times while driving.  Once your car detects your levels of boredom or stress then it will perform a range of actions anywhere from alerting you to possible upcoming traffic conditions to blocking your phone from receiving any potentially distracting messages while your focus is necessary.

How do these sensors detect your stress levels?  The seatbelt is responsible for sensing breathing rate, while the steering wheel measures pulse, skin response and even has infrared sensing technology that compares the cabin’s temperature with your own.  Temperature changes such as these can point to a change in the levels of agitation or alertness that you may be experiencing.

Biometric Driving Stress DetectingThe onboard sensors can influence systems such as lane-keeping assist and blindspot detection to adjust its alerts depending on the traffic and environmental changes.  These notify you as to how you should be prepared to react.  Ford is definitely driving towards a better and safer tomorrow!

Endangered Species of Michigan - What are you doing to help?

Help Endangered SpeciesBRIGHTON Mich., - As many of you know, some Michigan species of animals and plants are becoming threatened and endangered due to over-hunting, introduction of foreign species and the destruction of their habitats.  We at Brighton Ford think it is important to stay updated on how we can preserve and protect the environment and now you and your kids can stay updated too!

A full list of these species can be found at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service website but here is a short list of a few of the Michigan species that need your help:

Help Endangered Species

-    Canada lynx

Help Endangered Species
You may be asking yourself “how can I help these species survive?” Well according to ASPCA Kids, here are some ways that you can do your part.

First and foremost you must do what you can to stop pollution:
Throwing trash on the ground can harm animals and many times kill them, so next time take the extra second to walk to a trash can instead of polluting.

Secondly, you need to get yourself and your family in the habit of recycling:
-Recycle your bottles, cans, newspapers and old work or school papers that you don’t want or need anymore.
-Use cloth bags instead of plastic bags when you go grocery shopping.
-Turn off your lights, TVs and other electronics when you aren’t in the room using them.

Thirdly, conserve water:
Help Endangered SpeciesTaking shorter showers and not letting your faucets run is extremely important, due to the diminishing amount of fresh water that is available to us and to our animal and plant friends.

Last but not least, help your local parks and native species:
Volunteer at your local parks by cleaning up trash and also make an effort to plant native flowers, plants and trees in your own yard.  Don’t forget to put birdseed out in the winters as well!

So go out there and make a difference in your community! You’d be surprised by how much one person can help many people, plants and animals.

Fun Vacation Spots in Michigan

Michigan Vacation SpotsBRIGHTON Mich., - It’s summer!  Which means it’s time to look for some great vacation places that you can jump in your new Ford vehicle and take the whole family to.

Mackinac Island is considered one of the top 10 islands in the world, which is why this is a perfect vacation spot to bring friends and family from out of state to or even your children so that they may grow up experiencing the state as a true Michigander.  Riding bikes, taking horse drawn carriage rides, visiting the butterfly house, eating fudge and visiting historical landmarks are just a few of the many fun things that you can do on the island.

Michigan Vacation SpotsTraverse City is another big name in Michigan and even ranks within the top 10 summer trips in the world by National Geographic.  Enjoy the National Cherry Festival held by Traverse City starting July 7th and ending July 14th and while you’re at it sign up for the Cherry Idol (for all ages)! Also located in Traverse City are the Sleeping Bear Dunes, which were voted America’s most beautiful place.  The dunes are a wonderful place to bring your kids and relax.

Michigan Vacation SpotsIf you’re the adventurous type, then you will love traveling to Copper Harbor.  Located at the very top of the Upper Peninsula, Copper Harbor is a wonderful vacation spot for those of you who love the great outdoors as well as historical sites. The trip up there affords you many opportunities to stop and see waterfalls and lighthouses and even more once you have reached the destination.

Michigan Vacation SpotsAnyone who loves sports and wants to take a break from work to just spend some time on the outdoors will love Bay Harbor.  Golf Magazine has rated Bay Harbor Golf Club of Bay Harbor, Michigan as 8th best in the U.S. and would be a terrific place for experts and amateurs alike to visit while in the area.  If you love horses then Bay Harbor Equestrian Center is where you want to go!  They offer riding lessons to people who have both been trained and untrained in different disciplines, horse training and boarding, and they even put on shows and clinics.

This summer will be one to remember!
