2013 Ford Fusion Lane Keeping System Helps Drivers Stay In their Lane

The new 2013 Ford Fusion is packed with so many driver-assist features it has Ford saying that it rivals luxury cars costing twice as much! What are driver assist features? Well some of them, like electronic power-assist steering, you may already be driving with. But its features like the new Lane Keeping System that Ford will use as the foundation for safety in future vehicles.

“The new Fusion is a showcase of how we will use sensors and vehicle data to enhance the driver’s own capabilities when behind the wheel,” said Paul Mascarenas, Chief Technical Officer and Vice President of Ford Research and Innovation.

So, what is the Lane Keeping System? Well, it’s pretty simple actually. Lane Keeping helps drivers avoid unintentional lane changes through the use of a lane-detecting camera mounted in the front windshield. When the camera sees the vehicle is getting to close to the white or yellow line it will alert them by making the steering wheel gently vibrate.

Vibrations aren’t the only things the Lane Keeping System will use to keep you on course. The Lane Keeping aid takes it step further by applying “steering torque” to the wheel, informing the driver of which way they need to move the wheel in order to get back in the center of the lane. Both features can be used at the same time and you get a detailed breakdown of the entire Lane Keeping System in the video below.

2013 Ford Fusion Will Feature Auto Start-Stop To Save Fuel

Hybrid electric vehicles have used an auto-stop/start function to lower battery and fuel consumption since they first hit the market. It's a great feature that can really make a difference, but its most commonly only been used on hybrids. That's all about to change as the 2013 Ford Fusion will be the fist non-hybrid, mid-sized sedan to ever use the technology.

So what does the EcoBoost 1.6-liter's new start/stop feature do, you ask? Well, it automatically turns off the engine when the car comes to a stop at a traffic light or stop sign. As soon as the driver releases the brake pedal the engine will instantly start and get you moving again. This way, when you're stuck at the never-ending Hilton Rd/Grand River Ave. stoplight you won't be wasting any gas!

From Ford's press release...

"We expect the average Fusion driver with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine and Auto Start-Stop will save about $1,100 more than other midsize sedan owners during five years of driving," said Samantha Hoyt, Fusion marketing manager. "That's cash in their pocket and time saved with fewer trips to the pump."

Obviously, savings will depend on the driving conditions and this feature would be most beneficial to drivers who spend a lot of time in congested, urban traffic. Either way, it's just one more reason we can't wait for the all-new 2013 Ford Fusion.

2013 NASCAR Ford Fusion

BRIGHTON, Mich. Jan. 24, 2012 - Today on Ford’s blog, Ford Social, the company announced that they are brining the “stock car” back to NASCAR with the release of the 2013 NASCAR Ford Fusion racecar. The 2013 NASCAR Fusion racecar will be based on the production model that was revealed at this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Hundreds of users we able to join in the action of the live unveiling of the 2013 NASCAR Fusion on a live streaming video on the blogs site this afternoon. The viewers were able to see the racecar live as it was revealed as well as interviews with some of Ford Racing’s drivers, and even got to see the car in action at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

This year’s auto show had a full roster of head-turners, most notably the 2013 Ford Fusion, which had everybody raving. Hundreds of thousands of visitors, journalists, and auto enthusiast flocked to the Cobo Center in Detroit for the 24^th annual event. Although both foreign and domestic automakers rolled out their exciting line-ups of new models and concept cars, all the buzz seemed to be around the newly redesigned 2013 Ford Fusion.
