Things To Do In Metro Detroit This Weekend

BRIGHTON, Mich. - Memorial Day Weekend is JUST around the corner, which means summer is just around the corner right? We think so! The exciting thing is there is so much to do around town this weekend! Here is a small list of fun things to do in Metro Detroit this weekend! Higher temperatures are expected to return just in time for the weekend, so be safe and have fun! 

1. Catch a Tigers game! The boys of summer are busy chasing their fifth consecutive Central Division Championship, and that chase brings the first-place Houston Astros to Motown for a four game series that begins Thursday, May 22nd and goes until Sunday, May 24th at Comerica Park. There are still tickets available for all four games, with fireworks scheduled post game for  Friday, May 22nd. 2. Visit Greenfield Village for the Civil War Remembrance Event! This exciting reenactment, weekend event features bustling camps, calvary, period music, civilians, and historic presenters all in mid to late 19th century clothing. What a cool way to show the kids a little bit of the country's history! This year marks the sesquicentennial, the surrender of General Robert E.  3. Alma Highland Festival & Games. The famously fun Alma Highland Festival and Games first began in 1968 and since than, has grown into Michigan's largest celebration of Scottish heritage! 4. Balloons Over Bavarian Inn.  This event is perfect for the whole family! Hot air balloon enthusiasts can check out competitions and special shows in both the morning and the evening. The Ford Mustang Rolls Out With Two New Packages

2016 Ford Mustang GT Convertible with the California Special Package

BRIGHTON, Mich. - It's only May and the muscle car wars are beginning to heat up! This past Saturday, GM revealed the 2016 Camaro to the world but not before the Ford Mustang rolls out with two new packages; the California Special and the Pony Package. Both hark back to two trim levels made popular in the '60s. Both packages will go on sale this fall, the same time that the new Camaro will roll into dealerships.

Ford introduced the sixth-generation of the Mustang for the 2015 model year and the infamous pony car was made available to the world for the first time ever, with Ford selling the Mustang to Europe and Asia. This pony car is a pure world trotter! The new 50th Anniversary Mustang comes with new wheels and racing stripes among the dozens of new options designed to allow Mustang owners to better customize their cars.

The Pony Package is offered on the Premium trim level of the fastback and upgrades the car with unique 19-inch polished aluminum wheels, tri-bar pony logo on the grille, side stripe and chrome window surround. The Pony Package also has a Black Accent Package for the GT fastback and the convertible with special 10-inch black painted alloy wheels, blacklid spoiler, dark taillamp trim, and 5.0 pony logos in black (TRUST us, it looks SO SWEET). 

The California Package is also available for Mustang GT Premium owners and has an endless list of features including 19-inch ebony-painted machined aluminum wheels, unique grille, door panel inserts and carpet, aluminum dashboard finish with California Special badge, hood and side stripes, a black spoiler, faux gas cap, black mirrors and hood vents.

The History Of Mother's Day

BRIGHTON, Mich. – The second Sunday in May is reserved for the women who have brought us into the world: our mothers. The history of Mother's Day is a lot different than what most people believe. Long thought to be a classic "Hallmark Holiday", "Mother's Day" in a sense, has been celebrated since ancient Roman and Greek societies were at their highest.

Celebrations of mothers and motherhood initially started with the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held grand festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, however the clearest modern precedent for Mother's Day is the early Christian festival known as "Mothering Sunday", which took place during the 1600's.  

We can actually trace the roots of the modern Mother's Day celebration to many localized celebrations throughout the United States during the 19^th century. This includes Albion, Michigan where Juliet Calhoun Blakely, a temperance activist inspired a local Mother's Day celebration in the city of Albion itself in the 1870's. Anna Jarvis is considered to have founded the "official" Mother's Day in 1905, following her mother's death. Jarvis started a massive, nationwide campaign that focused on urging the national government to make Mother's Day an official holiday, all to honor her mother. Her intense persistence paid off and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson sighed an office measure establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

Today, many countries throughout the world celebrate different versions of Mother's Day, including Thailand and even Ethiopia. Here in the United States, Mother's Day continues to be celebrated by presenting mothers and other influential women with gifts and flowers, and has quickly become one of the biggest holidays for consumer spending. In the United States alone, approximately $14 billion dollars is spent on Mother's Day.
