Tips to Help Endure the Brutal Winter

BRIGHTON, Mich - As dangerously low temperatures head into Michigan, it is more important than ever to be sure you are taking the proper precautions in order to stay safe. Wind chills are heading into -20 and -30 degrees in some areas on the state; which is why we are providing you with a list of tips to help endure the brutal winter weather. • When going outside, wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. The trapped air between the layers keeps you warmer than if you were to wear one or two layers of heavy clothing. 
• Mittens that are snug in the wrist are better to wear than gloves.
• Watch for signs of loss of feeling or pale appearance in fingers and toes. These are a few signs of frostbite.
• Check heating units to be sure they are working correctly. Heating units that are damaged or working incorrectly can release carbon monoxide gas. Be sure to test any carbon monoxide detectors for battery life and proper operation.
• Check in with family, friends, and neighbors who may be at risk or need assistance. Keep a close eye on pets and keep them indoors if possible. Animals are at risk to the same cold weather injuries as people.
• Keep travel minimal. Keep a full tank of gas and an emergency kit in your vehicle that includes items such as warm clothing, a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, bandaids, etc. 
• Lastly, when solving snow, avoid staying out too long and over-exerting yourself. Take breaks and give yourself time to warm up.
