Important Safe Driving Tips

Important Safe Driving Tips
BRIGHTON Mich., - While on the internet the other day I stumbled upon an article written by a former race driver and driving instructor who has experience in teaching young people to drive and knows their weaknesses when doing so.  I think it is important to share his information with you. If you are a parent with teenagers who are new to driving, then pass these important safe driving tips on to them because it could very well save their lives.

Tip #1: Don’t be afraid to use your brakes!
The ABS in your vehicle has incredible abilities so even if you hear a strange noise or pulsation from the pedal do not be alarmed, that’s normal.  ABS actually allows you to steer while braking, so what is important to remember is that you don’t need to pull hard on the wheel to turn and to not let off of the brake until you have centered your steering.  If you do turn too hard without righting your vehicle then you could end up in a ditch or crossing into oncoming traffic.

Brighton FordTip #2: Use 9 and 3, 10 and 2 are long gone!
The numbers are of course referring to the position of your hands as if your steering wheel were an analog clock.  Before, you were taught that 10 and 2 were the correct positions, however, due to modern technology and air bags 9 and 3 are now the best possible positions.  Most vehicles are built with thumb hangers at exactly 9 and 3 anyways so just place your hands near those!  Never put your hand at 12, no matter how cool it may look.  If you hit something while resting your hand in this position then your hand can hit you directly in the face potentially breaking your nose, teeth and your hand itself, so unless you want to have the kind of yearbook photo that you’ll never live down then don’t do it.

Tip #3: Always stay calm!
It is common for young drivers (and even many older drivers as well) to want to overcorrect when they find themselves drifting off of the road.  In the event that you’re looking away from the road changing the air temperature or your mind begins to wander, your vehicle may drift off of the road a little bit.  If this happens then don’t panic!  Simply take your foot off of the accelerator and slowly steer your car back onto the road.  You’d be shocked at how many accidents and deaths can occur just because someone wasn’t paying attention to the road and didn’t remain calm.

Tip #4: Practice your reactions ahead of time!
It’s true what they say about how practice makes perfect.  Go to an empty parking lot and set up some cones, or use your imagination to picture situations such as a vehicle suddenly stopping in front of you on the road.  If you haven’t practiced getting yourself used to maneuvering around vehicles in an emergency situation then it’s likely that you’ll run into the vehicle in front of you.  However, practicing can get you used to reacting appropriately within the 2 seconds or less you have to avoid an accident.

ConesSo make sure you pass these important safe driving tips on to your teenagers, because even though they’ve gone through driver’s training, they are far from knowing all there is to know about driver’s safety and these tips could very well keep them coming home safe.

Tips For A Successful Family Vacation

BRIGHTON, Mich. – It’s nearing the end of summer so why not make the most of it by taking a last road trip in your Ford with the family!  We know how challenging it can sometimes be to keep your kids occupied on long trips so here’s a list of tips for a successful family vacation that will keep them happy and comfortable on the voyage!

Tips For A Successful Family Vacation
Snacks: Take along a variety of healthy and a few not so healthy snacks to tide them over until you can stop for a meal.  This will definitely keep the complaining levels down, trust us!

Crayons
Coloring Materials: Bring colored pencils, crayons or even stickers with you on the journey and your kids can pass a lot of time just drawing or coloring in coloring books.  Have them draw a picture of what they see outside of the window or what they think your destination will look like.  You’ll get some great pictures out of it for a scrapbook or just as keepsakes.

Road Trip Presents For KidsPresents: For those very long road trips you can try buying some fun things from the dollar store and wrapping them like presents.  You can give them to your kids every hour or so and they’ll be kept completely busy by their fun new presents!  Try buying things like little toy dinosaurs or (for when it starts to get dark out) glow sticks.  They’ll have a blast!

Children's Classics
Books: If your kids love books then this is a great way to keep them happy and maybe even make them a little tired.  If they aren’t big fans of books then maybe comic books would be a good option.  If they aren’t old enough to read then you can try going to your library and find books with audio CD’s or you could purchase a Tag Reading System from a store.

Fuzzy SocksComfy Clothes: It’s very important to make sure that your kids are wearing comfortable, road trip type clothing that will allow them to move around and fall asleep.  It would be a good idea to take blankets, a pillow or two and even fuzzy socks!

These are a few sure-fire ways to keep your kids happy on long trips. Pass these on to friends and family that have kids because these are some great tips for a successful family vacation.  Let us know how your family vacation goes on our Brighton Ford Facebook Page and share your experiences about what worked for your kids in the car!

2013 Ford Mustang Walk-around and Brochure: An American Icon
BRIGHTON, Mich. – “America, freedom, dreams, power, exhilaration, beauty, everything that represents this country [is] right here. The Ford Mustang.” On August 9th, Matt Renko participated in the 2013 Ford Mustang Walk-around and he couldn’t have said it better than he did that morning.  The Ford Mustang is America in vehicle form, strong, sporty, resilient and welcoming.  Mustangs have been around for 48 years and they’re here to stay.  See for yourself by looking through our 2013 Ford Mustang Brochure!  It’s as Renko said, the Ford Mustang is “a true American classic” and it will never go out of style!  At Brighton Ford we have Mustang A-Plan Pricing as well as lots of Mustang Rebates that you could qualify for when you fill out our form so visit us online or stop by our lot today and ask us about it!

A Little Bit of Mustang History:
1964 Ford Mustang
The first Ford Mustang premiered at the New York World Fair on April 17th in 1964 for only $2,368.  This price was both affordable and a great deal even for the time, but Ford had no idea that this vehicle would be such a hit.  In the first day only, 22,000 Mustangs were ordered.  Even the children’s pedal-powered Mustangs were a success having sold 93,000 during the holiday season.  An interesting fact about the 1971 Mustang is that it is longer than any other Mustang by almost a foot and is up to 600 pounds heavier than the original Mustangs.

About Matt Renko:
Matt Renko is from Howell, Michigan but currently lives in Brighton, Michigan with his family.  He is a salesman for Brighton Ford and loves his work but he has a variety of interests outside of cars too.  Renko plays golf and ice hockey but also enjoys playing, writing and producing music (including drumming), as well as skiing and snowmobiling.  His band “Thank You Thing” is a source of enjoyment and pride for Matt so you should check out his band when you get the chance!

Things You Should NEVER Say To A Police Officer

Things To NEVER Say To A Police Officer

BRIGHTON, Mich. – Have you ever been pulled over by a police officer for speeding?  If you have then you know that it can sometimes be a very frustrating experience and it can lead you to say some things that could really backfire on you.  Use our list of things you should NEVER say to a police officer and you could save yourself a bit of money!

“If I turn my car off then I won’t be able to turn it on again.”: Using this line on a police officer will not help you out at all, even if your car really is in bad shape.  If you say this to a cop then it could be cause for them to think that your vehicle is unsafe to drive and therefore warrants another ticket.  It’s best just to do as they say and turn your vehicle off, especially if it does turn on after you turn it off.

“I didn’t bring my I.D.”: Obviously if you don’t have your I.D. when driving a vehicle then you will receive a large fine but this tip is more for cyclists.  If you’re a cyclist then road rules apply to you too and if you are pulled over by an officer for let’s say running a red light then you will get a ticket.  If you try to tell the officer you don’t have your I.D. and you do (or if you use a fake name) you could get in serious trouble.  It is after all, illegal to lie to a police officer.

“Why don’t YOU tell me how fast I was going?”: Using any kind of sarcastic tone when answering an officer’s question will only serve to irritate them and they may issue you a harsher ticket.  Remember that police officers are people just like you and I and that they don’t deserve your attitude when they are simply performing their duty to society.  These are, after all, the same people who would risk their lives to protect you if an emergency arose.

“There were several cars speeding, why didn’t you pull them over?”: Complaining to an officer about getting caught speeding will not help you win them over, in fact it will make them like you less.  Imagine yourself as an officer and picture someone saying that to you.  Yeah, ticket for sure.

Speeding Ticket“I don’t know how fast I was going.”:  Playing dumb will land you with a ticket no matter what.  Police officers have people trying to get out of tickets all day long, they know when someone is being dishonest.  Saying that you don’t know how fast you were going could make you seem like an inattentive driver as well and that could land you with a bigger ticket.  Honesty is always the best policy.

Keep  this list of things to NEVER say to a police officer in mind for the next time you get pulled over and remember to breathe.  Getting a speeding ticket is not the end of the world and definitely not worth arguing with a police officer over.

Warning Light Explanations - Brighton Ford

Warning Symbols
BRIGHTON, Mich. - If you’ve owned a vehicle for any amount of time then chances are you’ve had one of your warning lights come on at some point.  It can be difficult to know exactly what you should do in the event that this happens, so here is a brief run-down of your possible vehicle problem.

Service Engine Light
When your “Service Engine” light turns on it is usually an indication that your vehicle needs maintenance soon.  Be sure that you don’t let this go for too long especially since you may be in need of an oil change or service.  Your light can be reset when you visit a garage or in some cases by you if you look in your owner’s manual.

Battery Light
If you see this light go on and stay on then this may be an indicator that your electrical system has malfunctioned.  If you continue to drive with a faulty battery then all of the juice will be used up and your engine will give out.

Check Engine Light
In the event that your “Check Engine” light comes on don’t panic because there could be a number of reasons why this has happened.  You’ll need to either purchase an OBD2 diagnostic tool that will allow you to read the fault code and reset the system, or you can go to a garage that will read the codes for you.  Some garages will charge for this service but many do not. Sometimes the problem can be as simple as not tightening your gas cap enough, other times it may be more serious problem so do not hesitate to have your vehicle checked out.

Oil Warning Light
Oil Warning LightThe “Oil Warning” light is a very bad sign, it means that your oil pressure is low and you need to have this repaired as soon as possible.  You could potentially kill your engine by continuing to drive while this light is on so don’t wait!

Coolant Warning Light
The coolant warning light means that you need to add a pre-mixed store bought coolant or distilled water (never tap water) to your radiator.  ALWAYS wait for the engine to cool before you open the radiator cap, otherwise you could be sprayed with boiling hot coolant.

Brake Warning Lights
When your “Brake!” light comes on you’ll want to check your manual for the exact meaning because there isn’t a universal meaning for this symbol in each car.  The “ABS” light (on ABS-equipped vehicles) means that the system has recognized that something is wrong and that you should have it looked at right away.  If this light is blinking then it is very serious and could even mean your brakes are dead or dying.

Warning LightsAt Brighton Ford we want you to stay safe and maintain your vehicle to the best of your ability that’s why we think it’s important that you know the correct steps that should be taken for emergency situations when your warning lights come on.  Visit our lot and take a look around our lot or call ahead to schedule a test drive in your dream vehicle today!

Tire Tips From Brighton Ford

BRIGHTON Mich., - As a car owner you should know a few very important tire tips so that you can keep your car running smoothly and safely.  Here are some facts that could really help you out!

Flat Tire
-       1) When you are only replacing two tires, put the new ones on the back:  No matter whether you have a rear, front or all-wheel-drive vehicle the rear tires are what provide stability and the new tires must go on the back.  Otherwise you run the risk of spinning out when driving in bad weather conditions or taking tight corners.

-       2) The TPMS (tire-pressure monitoring system) in your vehicle does not alert you that your tires are running low on air until they are more than 25% under the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure.  TPMS is supposed to be a last minute warning not just a friendly reminder so make sure you keep an eye on your tire pressure!

-     3) Your tires will not burst if you exceed the “max press” number for your vehicle, however, reaching such a high pressure level could cause a tire failure if you hit a big pothole on the road.

Tire TipsKeeping these things in mind can help you to become a more conscious and safe driver, so pass these tire tips along to your friends and family and make sure they know these simple yet important facts about tire maintenance!
