If you're looking for the next step in muscle car madness this 50th anniversary Shelby Cobra should be right up your alley. Dubbed the Shelby Cobra 1000, this beast packs in 950 street-legal ponies or a whopping 1,100 hp for those of you looking to keep things on the track. It's not cheap, (the upgrade will burn a $150,000 hole in your pocket before you even buy the required GT-500) but it sure is fast! You can get all the info in the story from FordInTheNews.com below.
Fifty years after the original Shelby Cobra first bared its fangs at the New York Auto Show, the company behind that revolutionary sports car—Shelby American, founded by the legendary Carroll Shelby—is headed back to the Big Apple with its most powerful performer ever: The new 2012 Shelby 1000, based on the already-amazing Ford Shelby GT500, will offer 950 hp in street trim and a mind-boggling 1,100 hp when kitted out for the track.
The recipe for cooking up this beast is a fairly simple one, as Shelby American’s engineers stripped the GT500’s 5.4-liter V8 down to the bare block and added a new crank, rods and pistons, then re-flowed the heads, upgraded the cooling and exhaust systems, and replaced Ford’s supercharger with an even more performance-oriented blower. Of course, there is one secret ingredient here—after that powerplant is built back up again, the company “then sprinkles it with a little Shelby magic.”
And the handling and stopping capabilities of the Shelby 1000 are equally supernatural, courtesy of six-piston front brakes and four-piston rear stoppers; a comprehensively retuned suspension with new struts, sway bars and bushings; and a new solid driveshaft. An aero-enhancing body kit is in the mix as well, featuring a slipperier hood, rear panels and splitter.
The price for all this hot-rod happiness? A cool $200,000 or so, since the street-legal package starts at $149,995 and the track version begins at $154,995—and neither includes the Shelby GT500 donor car.
Finally, although these cars promise nearly unlimited thrills, only a limited number will be built; those interested in the Shelby 1000 should contact Shelby American at (702) 942-7325 or visit www.shelbyamerican.com.
