1. Take care of your wiper blades and windshield wiper fluid. When you're driving down the road in snowy/slushy conditions, you want your windshield to be clear so that you can see what is in front of you. That's why it's important to make sure that your wiper blades are in good condition and that your windshield wiper fluid won't freeze. If your wiper blades are cracked, peeling, or leaving streak marks on your windshield, it's time to replace them. While you're taking care of your wiper blades, consider purchasing windshield wiper fluid that is designed specifically to spray in freezing conditions. By taking care of these two things, your windshield will remain clear and your surroundings visible.
2. Make sure your tires have adequate tread. When road conditions are less than ideal, you need to be as in control of your vehicle as possible - with bald or balding tires, you won't be able to do that. That's why we recommend checking your tires tread and replacing them if they are worn. Even better, exchange them for a set of snow tires that are designed to provide better traction and are equipped to handle extreme driving conditions.
3. Prepare an emergency kit to keep in your vehicle. When weather conditions are poor, it's important to be prepared for the worst. An emergency kit would be a great way to cover all your bases, should you be stranded in your vehicle. We recommend putting the following in your emergency kit:
- Non-perishable food and water – Granola bars, water bottles, and hard candy have a long shelf life, making it perfect for your kit
- A blanket and an extra pair of warm clothes
- A flashlight
- An ice scraper and a small shovel
- An extra pair of warm boots and gloves
- Jumper Cables
- First aid and tool kits
- Flares
- Sand, salt or kitty litter to provide traction should you become stuck
