Joining the laundry list of driver-assist technologies is Ford's Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection to help to avoid frontal crashes. This advanced system unlike any other is making its debut on the 2015 Ford Mondeo in Europe and then will proceed onto other Ford and Lincoln products worldwide. The Pre-Collision Assist will help to reduce the severity of or completely eliminate frontal collisions with vehicles and pedestrians.
Now, how exactly does Ford's Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection help to avoid front crashes? The answer: an advanced radar and camera technology that is able to scan the roadway ahead of the vehicle, detecting any possible collisions with a vehicle or pedestrian. If a risk occurs, the driver is immediately given an audible and visual warning. If the driver does not respond in time, the system is able to automatically reduce the vehicle's speed and apply a full braking force to help reduce the severity of, or eliminate, a forward collision.
While this system is extremely beneficial for unexpected situations, it does not replace the driver and the need of alertness. Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection does have some limitations during nighttime, low lighting conditions, vehicles moving in a different direction, and certain weather conditions. Customers are encouraged to utilize this system as a driving aid and not in lieu of personal awareness.
