Inheriting Your Parents’ Car For College? Read This!
It’s a bit more complicated than just taking the keys and heading off to freedom.
Follow these checklists—one for you, the other for your parents—for a smoother, safer transition.
STUDENT CHECKLIST
Consult your Ford owner’s manual. What kind of motor oil does your vehicle take? And how much? These are the types of things you’ll need to know, whether you take it to Brighton Ford Service or do it yourself—and it’s all in the manual.
Learn basic car maintenance, including how to:
Check/change the oil
Check the tire pressure
Fill the windshield washer fluid
Adjust the headlamps
Check/fill the coolant
Change the engine air filter
Change the power steering fluid
Change windshield wiper blades
Clean your vehicle—inside and out
Find a safe place to park on campus. Your school should provide information on permits and parking options for students; research this ahead of time.
Know your late-night security options. Check to see if the campus offers a after-hours security escort to your parked car. Remember, it’s a good idea to walk with friends when heading to parking areas at night and always choose well-lit paths.
Note nearby emergency phones. Many colleges have special phones around campus to help ensure students’ safety—locate the security phone closest to your parking spot.
Build an emergency kit for your trunk, including:
Jumper cables
Flashlight with extra batteries
First-aid kit
Tire-pressure gauge
Blanket
Rags or paper towels
Work gloves
Flares
Spare ignition key
Bottle of water
Granola or energy bars
A selection of basic hand tools, such as screwdrivers and pliers
Ice scraper, snow brush and kitty litter (to increase traction, if your college is in an area that gets snow)
Consider Roadside Assistance coverage. Ford 24-Hour Roadside Assistance can provide Ford owners with services such as towing, battery jump start, flat-tire change, fuel delivery and lock-out assistance. Call 800-241-3673 for details.
PARENT CHECKLIST
Weigh the benefits of signing over the title. You don’t want to end up paying unexpected fees, so consult your auto insurance company to see if your rates will change if your child becomes the owner of the car, and ask your accountant about any potential tax ramifications for you or your child.
Consult your Secretary of State (or DMV in many other states). If you decide to sign over the title, check with your Secretary of State office for details on making the transfer. Any change of the registered owner must be formally filed at you’re the Secretary of State.
Give the car a safety checkup. For your own peace of mind, you’ll want to make sure the car is in top shape for your child. Take it in for The Works package at Brighton Ford, which includes an oil change, tire rotation, brake inspection, multipoint inspection, fluid top-off, battery test, filter check and belts and hoses check.
OK, now hand over the keys.

Ford SYNC 3 Software Update Supports Android Auto & Apple CarPlay on '17 & '16 Model-year Vehicles
Ford is making Android Auto and Apple CarPlay software support available to model-year 2016 vehicles equipped with SYNC 3. Customers with model-year 2016 Ford vehicles can update to the new SYNC 3 version 2.2 by downloading to a USB drive, visiting a dealership or automatically through a Wi-Fi connection.
“Our SYNC 3 software platform was designed to be easy to update so we can get our customers the latest and greatest features, functionally and security enhancements,” said Don Butler, executive director, Ford Connected Vehicle and Services. “With over-the-air updates, we can deliver new features to customers in the background while they continue using their vehicles.”
Customers can update their software by visiting owner.ford.com to download and install with a USB drive, or by visiting a dealership. Customers with Wi-Fi-enabled vehicles and a Wi-Fi network can set up their vehicle to receive the update automatically.
Android Auto
Compatible with Android™ devices 5.0 and higher, Android Auto brings the Android experience into the vehicle safely and easily with Google Maps, Google Play Music, phone, messaging and third party apps projected on the car's built-in display and available via voice controls. With a simplified interface, large touch targets, Google voice search and easy-to-use voice controls, Android Auto is designed to minimize distraction while on the road.
Android, Android Auto, Google Maps and Google Play are trademarks of Google Inc.
Apple CarPlay
Compatible with iPhone 5 and later models running iOS 7.1 or higher, Apple CarPlay gives iPhone users an intuitive way to make phone calls, use voice-guided navigation, listen to music, and send and receive messages while staying focused on the road. Users can control Apple CarPlay through the in-vehicle display or via Siri voice control. Apple CarPlay support requires a USB hub upgrade available through Ford dealers.
SYNC 3 currently supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on all model-year 2017 Ford cars including the Fiesta, Focus, Fusion and Mustang, SUVs including the Escape, Explorer and Expedition, F-Series trucks and Ford’s electrified vehicles.
Receiving updates over Wi-Fi
Though Ford has been issuing SYNC upgrades since 2009, this is the first time the company is offering an update via Wi-Fi. In Wi-Fi-enabled vehicles with Automatic System Updates turned on within SYNC 3, the system will periodically connect to a customer’s designated Wi-Fi network to check for updates. If an update is available, the system automatically downloads the update in the background over a period of time without any customer interaction. And SYNC 3 is designed to perform the update as long as Wi-Fi is connected prior to the vehicle turning off, therefore there is no need to keep the vehicle running for the update to take place.
