Ford Develops Innovative Way to Transport Transit Van to North American Dealers

BRIGHTON, Mich - Ford has Developed an Innovative Way to Transport Transit Van to North American Dealers. With the Ford Transit offering customers the best-in-class interior cargo heights, it has also presented Ford engineers with a challenge. Typically, Ford ships vehicles from the assembly plants to the dealerships using railcars and trucks. However, the medium and high-roof Transit vehicles are too tall to fit in conventional railcars. So, these presented Ford engineers with an opportunity to develop an innovative way to transport the Transit Van to North American Dealers. Ford engineers worked closely with railroad and railcar manufacturers to develop an innovative railcar that could easily accommodate all of the roof-heigh variations offered on the new 2015 Transit. 

Ford and leading rail companies worked together to create these modified Transit railcars. Each of the inner decks have been elevated, allowing for as many as seven medium- and high-roof Transit vehicles to be loaded onto the lower deck and up to seven smaller vehicles, such as the Ford Fusion, to be loaded onto the top deck. The height of these railcars have not been modified, so there will be no issues with overpasses and tunnels. By incorporating modified railcars into the shipping network, Ford is able to deliver Transit vehicles more proficiently and for less money. For dealers that are within a 500-mile radius of the Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Missouri, where the Transit is produced, Transits will be delivered by truck. Shipments longer than 500 miles will be delivered by rail. Optimizing balance of rail and truck transportation will help in utilizing resources responsibly and support Ford's Blueprint for Sustainability.

2015 Ford Transit Joins "American Pickers" Cast

BRIGHTON, Mich - The 2015 Ford Transit Joins the "American Pickers" Cast on an episode airing on April 30th at 9pm EST/PDT on the History channel. "American Pickers" Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz are known for traveling around the United States to distant and rustic locations, searching for unique relics and antiques that can be restored and resold. In the episode on April 30th, the 2015 Transit -with the long wheelbase, extended body and high roof- will help Wolfe and Fritz throughout their mission. Kansas City Assembly Plant Welcomed 1,000 New Employees

BRIGHTON, Mich - Late last week, Ford's Kansas City Assembly Plant Welcomed 1,000 New Employees. These new members of the Ford family are assisting in the production for the launch of the all-new 2015 Ford Transit. The vehicle is set to go on sale in the United States this summer.

Ford Motor Company announced that 1,000 new employees will be working at the Kansas City Assembly Plant to begin production of the all-new 2015 Transit. It was also announced that 175 additional workers will be hired by March to help with production as well.

The Transit is one of 16 vehicles -23 globally- to be launched in the United States this year. The Transit has more than 45 years of heritage in Europe, where it is considered to be the best-selling medium commercial vehicle nameplate. The all-new Transit, going on sale this summer, will offer a wider variety of roof heights, wheelbases and body lengths, and a full suite of onboard features and technologies that are designed with businesses in mind. The all-new Transit will eventually be replacing the E-Series, which has been America's best-selling van for the last 35 years.

First sold in 1965, the Ford Transit is the best-selling commercial vehicle in the UK for 48 years. More than 7 million Transit vans have been sold globally and each one offers the driver power, durability, and capability to get the job done well. The all-new Transit is offering customers cargo volume up to almost 500 cubic feet, will achieve roughly 25 percent better fuel economy, and haul at least 300 pounds more than today's E-Series.

As Ford's Kansas City Assembly Plant Welcomed 1,000 New Employees, the company hits the mark of creating more than 5,000 new jobs in the US, including 3,300 salaried positions. More than 14,000 jobs have been created by Ford in North America throughout the past two years.
